Overview:
Schoolshi is an educational program for public elementary schools in the United States; it aims to teach 1st through 5th grade students about cooking techniques and different cultures, using sushi as the medium to do so. Schoolshi
is sponsored by various embassies which have a hand in making sure students are properly taught about their nation’s culture.
Schoolshi conducts cooking classes where students get to make varieties of sushi based on different cultures around the world. Schoolshi also gives each student a culture box to further explore a foreign culture by learning about some of their native crafts.
This project concluded with designing the Schoolshi brand and some of the elements of the Schoolshi program, including the recipe card, ingredients bag, and take-home craft box. This specific example is designed to teach about Korean culture, but the Schoolshi system can be applied to teach children about a wide variety of different cultures.
Process:
This project involved a heavy research process and multiple rounds of ideation before the final designs could be created.  The idea to use sushi as a medium for teaching children about different world cultures stemmed from the following fun fact:
The acceptable tastes for sushi differ regionally and the cuisine has adapted to various cultural norms around the world.
